Year 10 and Sixth Form
As part of our Shenley Horizons programme all year ten and selected sixth form students meet with KPMG employees who regularly visit the academy to provide highly successful support in preparing students for working life. This includes workshops on CV writing and interview technique.
Based on student evaluations completed in 2016:
- 97% of those said that spending time with the volunteers from KPMG increased their understanding of skills needed by employers
- 92% said it increased their awareness of different jobs available
- 92% said it increased their knowledge of different options available after leaving school
- All students stated an improvement in attitude including a readiness to take part, being open to new ideas and a desire to achieve
- The majority of students stated that their team working skills had improved including respecting others, cooperating, negotiating, persuading and contributing to discussions
A number of students commented on developing confidence having received support from KPMG employees:
“when the interviewer asked potential questions it gave me a real sense of the questions I’d be faced with in a real interview”
Simon Jonsson, the Partner for Tax, is leading the partnership for KPMG and Charles Fenwick and Lahiru Wijayasiri also work closely with Ian Horgan to plan and develop opportunities and experiences.
Year 8 and 9: KPMG Work Ready Event
The KPMG Work Ready workshop is an annual event that explores employability skills in a hands-on, interactive, fun and challenging manner. The workshops are led by three highly experienced workshop facilitators. In addition, volunteers from KPMG’s Birmingham office attend the sessions working closely with the students involved.
During the sessions, students work in teams and are assigned a mannequin and tasked with creating a new young person. They give their mannequin personal skills and relevant qualifications in order to ensure that they are employable – “work ready”. The event provides a perfect balance of engaging activities and serious content.
