Shenley Academy in Partnership with KPMG

We are very fortunate to have KPMG as one of our key partners, a link which is supported by BITC. KPMG is a huge international business, a provider of audit, tax and advisory services to businesses across the world. Their clients cover a wide spectrum of business and individuals, ranging from multinational household names to small “start ups”. Their clients include aerospace and defence, automotive, retail and consumer goods, building and construction, travel leisure and tourism, healthcare, public sector, financial services, engineering, power and utilities. KPMG have 138,000 staff in 150 countries worldwide. The Birmingham office at Snow Hill is the largest of the UK firm’s offices outside London and home to over 1000 staff.

KPMG have 9 Business Class partnerships across the country, an arrangement that is managed by BITC’s national education team in London. This long term partnership aims to improve students’ enterprise skills and employability by providing one to one and small group student support; use of KPMG’s conference suites and facilities; business mentor support; staff training and aspirational visits.

Year 10 and Sixth Form

As part of our Shenley Horizons programme all year ten and selected sixth form students meet with KPMG employees who regularly visit the academy to provide highly successful support in preparing students for working life.  This includes workshops on CV writing and interview technique.

Based on student evaluations completed in 2016:

  • 97% of those said that spending time with the volunteers from KPMG increased their understanding of skills needed by employers
  • 92% said it increased their awareness of different jobs available
  • 92% said it increased their knowledge of different options available after leaving school
  • All students stated an improvement in attitude including a readiness to take part, being open to new ideas and a desire to achieve
  • The majority of students stated that their team working skills had improved including respecting others, cooperating, negotiating, persuading and contributing to discussions

A number of students commented on developing confidence having received support from KPMG employees:

“when the interviewer asked potential questions it gave me a real sense of the questions I’d be faced with in a real interview”

Simon Jonsson, the Partner for Tax, is leading the partnership for KPMG and Charles Fenwick and Lahiru Wijayasiri also work closely with Ian Horgan to plan and develop opportunities and experiences.

Year 8 and 9: KPMG Work Ready Event

The KPMG Work Ready workshop is an annual event that explores employability skills in a hands-on, interactive, fun and challenging manner. The workshops are led by three highly experienced workshop facilitators. In addition, volunteers from KPMG’s Birmingham office attend the sessions working closely with the students involved.

During the sessions, students work in teams and are assigned a mannequin and tasked with creating a new young person. They give their mannequin personal skills and relevant qualifications in order to ensure that they are employable – “work ready”.  The event provides a perfect balance of engaging activities and serious content.
