Welcome to the Sixth Form
We are very proud of our Sixth Form students who make this a positive and exciting place to study, where independence is nurtured and high expectations about achievement lead to excellent results.
We have a long tradition of working with young people through their post 16 studies and on to successful destinations in higher education, good apprenticeships and employment.
Our Sixth Form ethos leads to a caring environment where the focus is on developing the skills and attributes needed in this phase. An experienced and nurturing team of subject specialist and pastoral staff support students through all aspects of their development. We have a strong student council, organising a range of events and students benefit from many visits, external speakers and career guidance opportunities.
We really are fortunate to have such a fantastic group of Sixth Form students who make this a wonderful place to study.
We are one of seven 11-18 schools, which have formed a post -16 collaborative, called The Oaks Sixth Form College. The reason why students join us here at Shenley Academy Sixth Form is for the personalised approach we take to the learning and personal development of each and every student. This, combined with our excellent facilities, including Sixth Form common room, with its suite of computers, ensures our students have access to the very best teaching and learning environment.
Within the collegiate each school has its own distinct sixth form, whilst collaborating to offer a wider range of courses than would be possible in any one school. Most of our students spend all of their time with us, but they can choose to take up a course on one of the other schools.
We have organised the Sixth Form curriculum into bigger blocks of time to improve the quality of teaching and learning, increase engagement and facilitate movement across schools. This has received positive feedback from staff and students and is improving learning and supporting more varied teaching. A weekly personal tutorial programme and personal guidance from the tutors, ensures that each student is well supported, including in their applications to higher education and employment.
A levels are the traditional qualifications offered by schools and colleges for 16-19 year olds. They’re highly valued by universities and employers and focus on academic subjects, although some are work-related.
BTEC Level 3 Nationals are designed as specialist qualifications for students who have a clear view of their future career or are seeking progression to higher education. BTEC Level 3 Nationals are equivalent to A levels and are highly valued by universities, further education colleges and employers alike.
