Thinking Big with Christmas Charity Campaign

9 January 2019

Bring together 1000 motivated and socially aware students under the shared vision of helping others at Christmas and something remarkable happens.

This year, Shenley Academy were able to support a local foodbank charity by collecting food parcels and toiletries to support families across our city.  The Trussell Trust runs a network of food banks across the UK and our local team were blown away by the support that the students of Shenley Academy have given this year.

Led by our Student Leadership Team, each tutor group was challenged to gather a selection of items that would bless our neighbours at this time.  Not wanting to be outdone, all tutor groups across the school contributed this recent initiative.  Our students love working together to do the right thing and we were delighted to see the volume of gifts rising as Christmas drew near.

Our students did not disappoint and as the pictures show, a van collection was needed to pick-up the 260kg of donations gathered!

This is just one of a number of community projects led by our student leaders in recent time.  The group have also started a programme of mentoring younger students in the school and really shows the values and ethos that permeate what we are doing.

Well done all,

Dear All at Shenley Academy,

Thank you so much for your recent amazing donation of 260 kg of food to the B30 Foodbank.  As you probably know we are a completely voluntary organisation, supported by the Trussell Trust.  We rely solely on donations from generous individuals or organisations such as yourselves to provide for single people and families within our community who, for whatever reason, find themselves in immediate crisis, and are therefore going hungry. Your gift will be used to help give our families in crisis enough food to make three meals a day per person for three days.

Just to give you an idea of the scale of the work of the B30 Foodbank, in 2017 we received donations of 59876 kg of food and we gave out 59452 kg, which fed 7567 people (4394 adults and 3173 children). This meant that in an average week, we were receiving around 70  referrals from various different agencies, and in response we were giving out on average 1254 kg of food per week, to feed 146 people (86 adults and 90 children). Although we do not have the final statistics yet for 2018, in the final few months of the year we were noticing a 50% rise in referrals compared to the previous year’s equivalent periods and, shockingly, in December alone we fed 1313 people.

As well as distributing food, our volunteers will also try to signpost clients towards other organisations who may be able to offer advice or assistance. Should you wish to learn more or keep up to date with the work of the B30 Foodbank, please visit our website, Twitter or our Facebook page.

We would like to reiterate how important your donation will be in helping us to make a significant difference to individuals and  families who would otherwise go  hungry  and on their behalf we  thank you wholeheartedly once again for your support. I am attaching a Certificate of Appreciation which you may wish to print out and display if you have a student  noticeboard.

Yours sincerely,

Christine Kearns
